THE ORIGINAL POWER PLANT IN VENICE operated at the time by Illinois Power and Electric Co. was hit by the tornado which caused the collapse of the central brick walls on either end of the structure. Some of the roof can be seen missing as well. Electric service to residences, businesses and the streetcars was offline for some time. None of the 28 men on duty there were killed or seriously injured.

A COMPARISON OF TWISTERS. Some of you may have heard or read about the Great St. Louis Cyclone of 1896. A much bigger rotating storm than that of 1927, more than 200 people were killed, thousands were injured and $50 million dollars of property was damaged or destroyed. It jumped the river and wreaked havoc in East St. Louis - the Tri-Cities were spared. For comparison purposes, you can read and look at photos in this 1896 tornado booklet.
