Jordan Hooks

On Tuesday, May 31st, 2022, Jordan Richard Hooks passed away at the age of 39.

Jordan was born on May 26th, 1983 in Richmond Heights, Missouri – the exact same day the United States won the Walker Golf Cup awarded to the best amateur golfing country in the world. It was a sign; his passion for the game was unparalleled and he'd spend most of his adult life being the best ringer in the St. Louis metro area for any and all odd-numbered groups needing a win. He was proud of his time participating in the Amateur Players Tour. He loved his driver dearly but would be happy to never see his putter again.

A 2001 graduate of Marquette High School in Alton, IL, Jordan excelled at tennis – participating in the IHSA state tournament his senior year before ultimately finding his calling as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service.

He prided himself on the USPS official motto "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds" and often could be found making deliveries well past sunset or during inclement weather while the rest of us wouldn't dare go outside. He had a passion for superior customer service, so much so that he'd receive too many thank you gift cards and baked goods from homes along his rural route during the holidays and friends/family members would benefit by getting surprise gifts from places he didn't enjoy. He didn't own a dog, but he will be sorely missed by dozens of his adopted canine friends in yards across Edwardsville.

While his dream job was working for the USPS, Jordan also loved investing and financial services. Fastidious with most things in his life, he was also eager to dispense advice and information about market trends, emerging companies and, yes, even crypto.

As an avid sports fan he saw his local professional teams win 4 championships in his lifetime, each one more special than the last.

Jordan was a kind, generous and loving friend to everyone he met. You could count on one hand the amount of times he raised his voice. And if you're reading this right now, there's a really good chance that he cared about you. That's ultimately his legacy and it's not a bad one to leave us with.

Survived by parents, Rick and Betsy Hooks and brother Aaron Hooks. Also, by beloved Uncles and Aunt Jack (Mary Kay) Fields, Pete (Gloria) Fields, Tom Fields and Mary Ann (Dick) George. Godmother Colleen Fields. And cousins Matt Fields, Eric Fields, Mike George, Tim George, David Fields and Mark Fields.

A visitation followed by a brief memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 14th from 4p to 7p at Saksa Funeral Home located at 210 N. Kansas St. in Edwardsville, IL.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, please consider a donation to First Tee of Greater St. Louis in Jordan's memory. First Tee is a 501 (c) 3 organization that impacts the lives of young people by providing educational programs and promoting healthy choices through the game of golf. You can find them online @ firstteestlouis.org/donate

Evelyn "Evie" Ritz

Evelyn Louise "Evie" Ritz, 74. of Belleville, IL, passed away at 12:03 a.m. on February 25, 2022. She was born on August 19,1947, in St. Louis, MO, to the late Bernard and Edna (Culp) Ritz.

Evie graduated from Venice High School in 1965 and earned her Bachelor’s and then her Master’s Degree in Education from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville in 1975. She taught 3rd grade for the Madison School District at Blair School from 1970 to 1975, at which time she was hired by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). She taught school on reservations in Cherry Creek, South Dakota and Albuquerque, New Mexico.

In 1979 Evie became a civilian employee of the Department of the Navy as an Education Specialist. This career path took her to Washington D.C.; Detroit, Michigan; Fresno, California and eventually San Diego where she retired from the Navy in 2006. Evie was honored as the Education Specialist of the Year for her district in 1993 and was presented the award by Hillary Clinton at the White House.

Evie remained in San Diego until 2019 when she moved back to Illinois to be closer to her family and old friends. She settled in Shiloh and then eventually in Belleville.

In addition to her parents, Evie was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Siscel; sisters Shirley Watkins and Jeannette Flannery; brothers Charles and Bernard Ritz; and nephews Tim and Bernie Woodrome.

She is survived by her brother, Robert (Patricia) Ritz of Troy, MO; niece Julie (Bill) Godfrey of Granite City, IL; sister-in-law Barbara (Charles) of Killeen, Texas, and great-nieces and nephews.

Anyone who knew Evie was blessed to experience her larger-than-life personality. She loved to sing, was a fabulous cook and enjoyed hosting friends in her home for dinners. And when she laughed, you knew Evie was in the room—and she loved to laugh! She enjoyed talking about growing up in Venice and she loved her hometown.

She was especially close to her sister, Jean. She always said Jean was more like a mother to her than a sister. She said Jean worked tirelessly on securing whatever support she could for Evie to have the opportunity to go to college. She loved Jean’s children, Bernie, Tim and Julie very much.

Evie was very strong in her Catholic faith. This was demonstrated not only by her generosity to her church, but to anyone she encountered that was struggling. She was deeply impacted by the suffering of others.

To her friends with whom she was close, Evie became an important part of their families. As a result, over the years her “family circle” grew huge. During her years in San Diego, she created a very special bond with the Baez family. A young family of four- Parents: Ralph & Betty, and children: Rafael & Erika. Rafael and Erika or “baby boy” and her “baby girl”, as she called them, were like her adopted children. Never having children of her own, Evie devoted so much to helping raise them. Most days were spent at the beach or simply at home cooking and baking delicious food. Rafael and Erika described their time with Evie as “pure laughter and unconditional love”. Because of Evie’s ever youthful energy, Rafael and Erika learned that even though you grow old you never have to grow up.

Describing Evie’s home as a sanctuary, the Baez family have endless amounts of stories and memories that bring a smile to their face anytime they think of her. The kids reminisce on their movie marathons including Ev’s favorites like The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins and Cinderella. As adults, her baby boy and baby girl now truly realize how fortunate they were to have such a positive and loving figure come into their lives. Having known Evie for more than 25 years, to this day, the Baez family will always remember Evie’s advice and lifelong lessons. Simply put, Evie will be dearly missed.

Per Evie’s wishes, her body was donated to science and there will be no services.

Robert N. Vickers Sr.

Robert Norman Vickers Sr., 94, departed from this life on Saturday, December 4, 2021.

He was born in the small town of Lerna, Illinois., population of 366 in 1927, the year he was born.

Vickers’ father and mother, James Beverly Vickers and Thelma Robinson-Vickers, raised four of their children in Mattoon, IL, about 15 minutes from Lerna. Vickers, however, was raised by his grandparents, the A. L. Robinsons, the first and only black family in Lerna at the time.

He excelled in athletics and academics at Lerna High School as “the only black kid” in the city’s schools, Vickers said.

“Not bragging, but I was one of the smartest kids in town,” Vickers was quoted during a 2019 interview. He was not only captain of the school’s basketball team, but he also graduated as class salutatorian. “If not for ‘race,’ I would have been valedictorian,” Vickers said.

Vickers enrolled at Eastern Illinois University, in Charleston, IL, and pursued a degree in industrial arts. He graduated in 1949 and got his first job as an educator a year later, teaching shop classes at Lincoln High School in Venice, IL, established for black students in 1909. Seeking to reside near his job, Vickers moved to East St. Louis. It was there, in 1950, he met the love of his life, Claire Lee Bush, whom he married.

Vickers was promoted to assistant principal then principal at Venice Lincoln schools, and later served as assistant superintendent and eventually superintendent of schools in Venice, the first black man to hold those positions. He retired from Venice in 1987 after 38 years of education leadership.

In the early 1950s, East St. Louis still had a diverse populace dependent on a thriving economic base. It was fueled by major industries such as aluminum factories, foundries, stockyards, and meat-packing facilities, but because of the city’s rapid decline due to deindustrialization, the Vickers decided they and their four children would relocate.

He and Claire moved to University City, MO, and lived on Dalkeith Lane until she passed away at the age of 80 on Aug. 28, 2012. According to the family, Vickers Sr. also “passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family.”

Robert Norman Vickers, Sr., is survived by his daughter Vikki (Vickers) Deakin, one son Steven Vickers and his sister Caryl (Vickers) Taylor, 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and four great, great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by two sons, Robert Jr. and attorney Eric E. Vickers.

Sister Marguerite (Margie) Luddon

We commend to God's charity the soul of our beloved Sister Marguerite (Margie) Luddon, 86, who departed this life on September 15, 2021, In the seventy-second year of her religious life.

Sister Marguerite (Margie) Luddon was one of three daughters and one son born to Lillian (Rush) Luddon and John Luddon on October 14, 1934, in Venice, Illinois. Her brother John and sister Mary Donna Scaturro, along with her parents, have preceded Sister Margie in death. Her remaining sister, Rita Luddon, lives in the St. Louis area.

Sister Margie was baptized in St. Mark’s Parish in Venice, Illinois, and went to grade school there where she was taught by the Sisters of Divine Providence. Sister Margie entered the community in 1949 and, after her profession of vows in 1952, began her ministry as a cook in a variety of convents. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Education with a minor in art from Harris Teachers College in St. Louis.

From 1958 to 2001, she served as an elementary school teacher in parish schools in Missouri and Illinois. Her longest tenure (23 years) was at North American Martyrs School in Florissant, Missouri. After she retired, she continued to be available for substitute teaching and also served as a catechist. She prayed daily for her Sisters in community and for anyone who asked for her prayers.

Sister Margie loved being with people. Her family was so special to her. Photos of them were posted wherever she lived and she was ready to tell stories about them to anyone. She always kept in touch and shared many a good time with them over the years. Friends and neighbors alike felt connected to Sister Margie; her friendliness welcomed all into an expansive network of loving relationships.

She loved fun. During community celebrations in St. Louis, you could count on her doing a variety of dances. She shared that her image of God was of him doing the hokey pokey; she said all ages can do this so it must be God’s favorite. She loved going to St. Patrick’s Day parades with her dear friend, Sister Sophie Marie (the former Juliana Meehan who passed away in 2009). One year they went as potatoes.

Sister Margie was a woman of prayer. Every night before she went to bed, she would picture Bishop Ketteler and Mother Marie with all her deceased family members, friends and Sisters in community saying the Our Father together. She, of course, would be praying with them.

Her last years after her strokes led her eventually to St. Joseph’s Center at Providence Heights in Pittsburgh, where she received the care she needed. Her appreciation of visitors was evident to everyone who came to know her. It was a special gift to have her two nieces, Marge Hicks and Mary Beth Brugmann, visit her in Pittsburgh and arrange for a phone visit for Sister Margie with her sister, Rita.

Margie’s Irish heritage led her to the wearing of many greens. When her Irish eyes were smiling it was indeed like a morn in spring, and in the lilt of her Irish laughter you could hear the angels sing. Angels were always special to Sister Margie. Now you are with them, our dear Sister and friend, and we are so happy for you.

There will be visitation on Thursday, September 16, 2021, in the Chapel from 6-8 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. On Friday, September 17, 2021. there will be viewing for an hour before the Mass of Resurrection at 3 p.m. CDT. Burial will follow in the Sisters’ Cemetery.
